The Turbine Hall

The Turbine Hall is the CastleGate’s largest and most spectacular space.  Originally housing the turbines that provided electricity for the city trams, it is one of the largest halls of its kind in Newcastle.

The Hall was designed as an undivided space to facilitate turbine maintenance.  It therefore benefits from a fine, open floor plan with no pillars to obstruct views.  An overhead crane ran backwards and forwards along rails built into either side of the Hall.  Capable of lifting up to 50 tonnes, the crane raised and moved the turbines during periods of servicing or replacement.  Although the crane is no longer operational, it remains as an impressive feature in its once fully functioning setting in the large open roof area.

The Turbine Hall is situated on Melbourne Street, with direct street-level access, making it ideal for those with limited mobility.

The hall is suitable for a wide range of uses including:

  Events
Conferences - up to 550 delegates
  Live performances
  Exhibition & trade shows
  Rehearsals
  Annual general meetings & seminars
Dining for up to 250 guests
  Examinations

The hall lends itself to large events, but also suits events wishing to accommodate a variety of functions within the same space.

PA facilities are available and the hall is also fitted with projection screens, which may easily be connected to your own laptop for PowerPoint presentations.  These facilities are free of charge but must be booked in advance through the CastleGate office.
